Customers Reviews 2010-03-19 Back To The Drawing Board This product has a lot of potential, but it really needs to go back to the drawing board first. On the plus side, the case is indeed very durable, probably the most durable on the market. *IF* I were to drop my iPhone, I would want nothing but an Otterbox protecting it. But that is precisely where the product's main shortcoming lies: it falls to the ground much too often. The holster does not hold the phone securely enough; consequently, an ill-placed wrist or elbow can easily send the phone flying to the ground. This happened to me just a few hours ago as I emerged from a Walmart and reached into my pocket to get my car keys. The next thing I knew, I was stooping over an asphalt pavement, praying that my phone was not irreparably damaged. Fortunately, it wasn't.
As pricey as this case is, it should have a locking mechanism to prevent such mishaps. I've also noticed two other flaws that other reviewers have commented on: the oil slick under the screen and the fact that the phone cannot be docked while in the case. Of course, in the big scheme of things, these are relatively small issues, but when you pay a premium price, you expect quality workmanship and attention to detail. Though it has potential, the Otterbox Defender needs a lot more of that attention to detail for it to become a 5-star product. | 2010-03-18 Great protection, can't see the screen I have owned many iPhone cases and this is definitely the most protective. I bought it specifically to put my iPhone in while on a ski trip to offer additional protection in case I dropped it in the snow. Unfortunately the much talked about "oil slick" effect, coupled with outdoor light made it virtually impossible to see the screen. We took video and shot pictures without really knowing what we were aiming at. It became so annoying that I couldn't wait to get back home to put my other case back on. I tried all the tricks mentioned in other reviews to remove the oil slick but nothing worked. And don't think you'll be taking this case on and off. It's a complete pain to try to pry this thing off once it's snapped into place. I also noticed it was more difficult to hear calls. I had to position the phone just right to be able to hear. So while it gets 5 stars for protection, it gets one star for usability. | 2010-03-18 get this!! Amazing. One small word, sums it up. I am a very avid comparison shopper and very hesitant to spend alot of money on cases. I have bought 4+ cases, finally spent the cash and splurged. I am a touchy person, so I actually bought this at the apple store. Difference of twenty bucks, but apple store gives you a year warranty. This mother is a beast. I can probably throw this against the wall, and no harm will be done. Clips very nicely into the holster, very easy to use. Complaints about it being bulky, well, you either get bulky and protection, or not! It doesn't really add that much bulk, and to me it actually makes it easier to hold the phone!
I would buy this again and probably will be buying it for my brother, as he is just as rough on phones as I am. I would recommend this to everyone! | 2010-03-17 Good investment for your iphone So you've got your new iphone and it's sleek, gorgeous and can do anything. Naturally, you want to protect your investment. After looking far and wide, I went with the otterbox defender case. It's not flashy but will protect your phone better than anything else out there even drops and the occasional rainstorm. Also, the price (about $30) was reasonable for what you get. I got the yellow and black model for myself and the black one for my fiance. Comments I get on mine are usually, "what a huge phone" so it makes your phone look a bit bigger but also people don't seem to recognize it as an iphone. I suppose that makes me less of a mugging target! lol. One final thought, the rubbery outer case makes it easy to hold between cheek and shoulder when you don't have time to grab your bluetooth. | 2010-03-17 Most protective case out there I purchased this through [...] for the same price amazon is selling for but their shipping is only [...] so it ends up costing less. The case has the hard plastic layer around the actual iphone, then there's the rubber outer layer around the hard plastic. It has access to all the ports through openings on the hard plastic case and rubber tabs that need to pulled back to access those openings. The only thing is that some china made cig or wall adapters are made that the housing that surrounds the bottom sync/charging connector are too large and the plastic lip that the rubber tab sits in will only accommodate the oem shaped housing around the connector. Same goes with the headphone opening. You have to find one with a small housing around the 3.5mm headphone connector to have it sit flush into the orifice. As far as the oil slicking effect, I took a tiny amount of baby powder and spread it around the surface of the screen. In my case I also had an additional protective film on the iphone touch screen. My case is the latest version which they had the foam inserts were not present so I didn't have any echo problems. I hope in their future revisions they have a thicker protective screen protector. As far as a case to carry my iphone with the defender case I found a military police style case made by Raine Inc. model "Heavy Guard" PDA POUCH 052PClip at the HQ Army-Navy Store at my local mall. It had a heavy duty nylon mesh outer layer usually used in police/military style pouches. I like this pouch because it has a very secure heavy duty belt clip which will not get knocked off your belt because of the design of the clip. It also has a full flap using the heavy duty nylon mesh when the flap is over it gives the iphone a double layer of protection. Another is that it uses a wide velcro to secure the flap closed. Although the case's flap is about 1/2" longer it still attaches a considerable amount of the hook and loop to secure the flap shut. The case is still a tad roomy even with the defender case but any tighter would make if more difficult to remove the iphone out of the case. They have a specific model for the iphone but to fit w/out the case with a thinner material not nearly as protective as the model above I'm using. |

Fire Protection for your iPhone: New Case by OtterBoxDo you want your beloved iPhone truly protected against…anything? I think that I’ve found a great solution for you. There is case called OtterBox Armor Series. It is stronger that Arnold Schwarzenegger, stronger that Bin Laden, even stronger than Robo-cop.
The features of the Armor Series:
- Fits 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB iPhones
- comes in yellow or black Waterproof
- dustproof
- dirtproof
- sandproof
- drop-proof
- Screen protected by a PATENTED thin membrane which remains fully functional through the case
- Two easy open compound latches secure the case
- iPhone is cradled by impact absorbing rubber on all sides
- External phone jack maintains the microphone and click button functionality of the Apple headphones or usable with any style headphones with a standard mini stereo plug (1/8″)
- Weight (Case Only): 4.5oz
- Dimensions: 5.8 x 3.2 x 1
At first sight the case seems a little too bulky, but when you read the protection features you get to understand what this bulk is caused by. The case is for those who want to speak over their iPhone in the open space. Water, sand, dust is no longer a problem. Fighting for Nepal’s liberty? Don’t forget to cover your iPhone with Armor Series case.
Getting the phone into the case is a piece of cake. You simply slide it into the case which opens like a clamshell and fasten the latches back into their place. The major disadvantage of the construction is that you can talk via headphones only.
The Verdict
Armor Series is the top model in the product line of OtterBox. It is made for those who need the maximum protection for their phone and want to use in the “extremest” conditions imaginable.
The price of the device is $69.95. That is not cheap, but you really get the protections you pay for. If you need that kind of 110% protection the case won’t be a sheer waste of money. To my mind no case is able to compete with Armor Series in the degree of phone protection.
