Do Not Call Lists or Why iPhone Owners Seldom Use their Phone for Voice Calls
Â
When it comes to paying your phone bill if you have an iPhone you can do it in a matter of seconds – from your phone. You go touch settings -> phone -> AT&T services. At the same time you can use other options like “View my minutes” to see where your money goes.
Do you want to know what is really incredible about the current use of iPhone? It is that the device is used less for making calls than other mobile phones!
International Business Times has unveiled a report saying that only 46.5% of iPhone owners sue their device for voice calls (whereas the figure is 71.7% with BlackBerry users).
Another point of the report is that iPhone users spend 12.1% of their time on the Internet. The owners of other phones spend up to 2.4%. Do you see now the difference in the use of iPhone and other communicators?
More than that iPhone owners spend 11.9% of their usage time listening to music or watching video (whereas the figure is 2.5% with other mobile devices).

I’ve heard people saying that they use only about 10% of the given 200 text messages per month. Why? Because they use email instead. Email use enabled by iPhone is so great that people simply reject using traditional SMS. At the same time it seems rather weird. When you send someone a text message you are waiting for something that is called a “fast” answer, but you cannot ensure that writing an E-letter.
Even those who have the smallest plan with 1800 rollover minutes tend to use hundreds of MB of Internet traffic in data
And if you take this family share plan you are given 5000 rollover minutes. Some families I know told me that the utmost they use per month for calling is 200 minutes, the rest accounts for email or text messaging.
The thing people say about iPhone is that it is not a phone with Internet access but a small computer with a voice call function. Seems strange but credible, isn’t it?
Major Use of iPhone: EMail & Laptop Substitute
Major Use of iPhone: EMail & Laptop Substitute
iPhone has had quite a huge impact on its users since the moment it was launched. But so far there haven’t been any figurative proofs. Are you ready for them now? There was a poll conducted. They took 460 iPhone users in the States and questioned them about the usage of the device. I won’t comment on the whole survey, instead of it I will try to comment the points which I found the most interesting, unexpected and peculiar. Here you are:
1. Email is the major data use of iPhone
In fact, it is no wonder that the major data function of iPhone is email. Checking email on iPhone is a simple as picking one’s nose. At the same time it is rather unexpected that more people use email on the iPhone that SMS or MMS. Why it is unexpected? Because about half of iPhone users are under 30 years old.
2. One third of respondent carry another phone on them
1/3 from 460 respondents is 153. These 153 people prefer to have another communicator while having an iPhone. Why do you think this is happening? I can assume that iPhone is much better for personal use (for instance checking the email) whereas other devices can be used for conducting business. I read some post on iPhone usage a few days ago and one man commented saying that when in Europe he often uses his Motorola RAZR for local while having an iPhone.
3. One forth of the respondents claim that their phone is displacing a notebook computer
1/4 from 460 is 115. So 115 respondents said that instead of carrying around a laptop, they prefer an iPhone. This is what the reports say:
“28% of iPhone users surveyed said strongly that they often carry their iPhone instead of a notebook computer.”
To tell you the truth I don’t believe that even such an amazing gadget as an iPhone can be the full functionality of a laptop, but…you see that the survey proves me wrong.
4. AT&T is making a fortune
It is quite obvious, isn’t it? The survey has revealed that half of the respondents eventually had to change carriers (as it is a common knowledge that in the States one has to be subscribed with AT&T to use an iPhone). I became curious about how much does AT&T really earn. You won’t believe it! $2 billion per year (yes it is not million it is BILLION). Wow!
To cut the long story short, have a look at the following chart that will show you what people usually do using their iPhones:

Have you heard that announcement on CNBC about BlackBerry 9000 being an iPhone killer? They mentioned BGR’s First Impressions of the BlackBerry 9000 and called the device an upcoming hit.
Well, with all due respect to the opinion of CNBC I can call their statement at least doubtful! Can these devices really compete?
Let’s have all the pros of BB 9000 considered:
- 480×320 screen
- GPS
- Wi-Fi
- 3G
- New OS
- Faster processor (624 Mhz)
- What else?
But are there any cons of BB? Sure there are! For example, that ugly keyboard. So far, I haven’t heard a single person who would comment on the keyboard positively. Everyone says the same: why put the keyboard from 8830 on the new device? But at the same time I cannot say that everyone is absolutely happy with Apple’s touchpad. Some say that it is simply disgusting for emailing and this sort of stuff.
Another thing about BB 9000 is the battery. The phone has been created for business use, BUT can a real successful phone has a battery that lasts no more than 4 hours in the direct call mode? I wouldn’t say that! Even the direct competitor of BB 9000 Nokia E90 has a longer battery life (to tell you the truth E90 seems unbeatable in this very respect!) But some people say that it is no wonder that the battery is so “thin” considering the number of options provided by the creators (Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS), these people don’t seem to mind carrying a reserve battery in their pockets.
Well…that’s not all with the disadvantages of BB 9000. The OS of the device cannot stand to any kind of criticism. Why? Because it is antiquated. It has unbelievable memory leaks, constant java errors etc. With such software backup I doubt that BB will ever keep up to the pace of Apple not speaking of overtaking it.
So what can we conclude from CNBC’s forecast? I would say that these two gadgets (I mean iPhone and BB 9000) fight in different weight class. So far (with a new iPhone coming) BB hasn’t beaten BB in a single category. So DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT BB 9000 IS iPhone KILLER?
Tough Competitors : Apple’s iPhone And BlackBerry’s Smart Phones
Tough Competitors : Apple’s iPhone And BlackBerry’s Smart Phones.

Apple Inc.’s introduction of the iPhone in June brought attention to smart phones, and more people are starting to use them, including Nokia and Blackberry. People are starting to realize, ‘Why should I buy a Razr when I can buy a BlackBerry or an iPhone?’
Motorola company never came up with another hit like the Razr. For the most part, the phones didn’t catch on in the face of tough competition from foreign makers such as Nokia and Samsung.
The company will create two communications companies in a tax-free transaction in 2009: Mobile Devices, its handset operation, and Broadband & Mobility Solutions, a catch-all entity containing its government and public safety units, telecom gear, and cable set-top receivers.
Users of Apple’s iPhone are using the device to do everything but talk on the phone, according to a new study, transforming the product into a mobile entertainment platform rather than just a cellular phone.

Owners of competing products - such as Nokia’s N92 or Research in Motion’s Blackberry - use their phones for voice communications 71.7 percent of the time the company discovered, while iPhone owners spend just 46.5 percent of their time with the product engaged in voice calls.
U.S. consumers said they spent 12.1 percent of their iPhone usage time accessing the Internet, a stark contrast with 2.4 percent for all mobile phones on average.
Furthermore, iPhone owners spent 11.9 percent of their usage time listening to music or other audio, compared to just 2.5 percent for all mobile handset users.
Google and Bank of America recently commented on how the rapid rise of traffic from iPhone owners is forcing them to modify their support of mobile Internet activities.
But iPhone Popularity Spurs Blackberry Sales. It added 2.2 million new subscribers during the quarter, bringing its total to more than 14 million, and it shipped about 4.4 million smart phones.
Apple has said it sold 2.3 million iPhones in the quarter that ended Dec. 29, for a total of about 4 million in the six months since the device’s launch.
BlackBerry’s smart phones are cheaper than iPhones, and many people consider them easier to use for e-mail and text-messaging because they have traditional keypads instead of touchscreens.
